Verrazzano's Horizon
A historical fiction by
Roger M. McCoy
A history professor, Ross Turner, makes a valuable find when he discovers a previously unknown journal covering Verrazzano’s voyage to North America in 1524. Professor Turner’s translation of the journal reveals many details about the voyage along with many insights to concurrent events in the early sixteenth century, e.g. exploration of the world, the Reformation, the Renaissance in France, and the rise of humanism.
This historical fiction is thoroughly researched using authoritative sources for the momentous voyage of Verrazzano in1524. It was a voyage of several important firsts: the first to fill in the map between Florida and Newfoundland; the first to record contacts with Native Americans on the east coast of the United States; the first to show there was no water passage through the continent.
The author tells the story of the Verrazzano brothers’ efforts to realize their separate ambitions. Giovanni, the captain, is ambitious to find wealth and fame that await him beyond the horizon. When he finds no sign of wealth along the coast of North America, he sees impending failure. Bitter disappointment comes when he returns to France to find the French king embroiled in a war with the Holy Roman Emperor and uninterested in more voyages to the New World.
While translating Verrazzano’s journal the history professor has his own personal conflicts when his love entanglements begin interfering with his own work.
Two maps are included.
